Ullapool Winter Guide

Ullapool is truly a twelve month of the year tourism destination. While you will find Ullapool quieter from November to March, you will also find a village that is open with unique seasonal beauty and attractions.

Stunning winter landscapes: The low winter light, snow-caped peaks, striking winter skies contrasted by the red and ochre hues of winter vegetation makes this time of year one of the most stunning scenically. It is the time of year when our local landscape photographers are most active and a great opportunity for amateur photography and sightseeing.

Dark star lit winter nights: If you are lucky enough to be in Ullapool with cold crisp winter nights, then you will be blown away by our winter night skies. A tapestry of stars with the milky way arching above your head. It is also the very best time of year to see the illusive Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

The Highland winter weather: Great rewards can be gained by embracing our Highland winter weather. From crisp winter days to the excitement of winter gales. Getting out into our weather and fresh air makes you feel alive, particularly when there is a warm fireside pub, restaurant or accommodation to return to in the evening.

Winter walking: For the experienced, our local mountains can be at their best in winter, but there are also innumerable easier walks in the local areas that are all accessible in the winter months.

Snow: Due to the warming gulf stream, snow seldom lies for long across in coastal areas near Ullapool, but short hill walks or drives to the inland moors will often take you to snow fields.

Cosy cafes pubs and restaurants: Ullapool stays open 12 months of the year (see the Welcome Ullapool Winter opening timetable) and this is the time to enjoy our relaxed and intimate cafes, pubs and eateries often by a cosy fireside with a warming drink or dram.

Road accessibility: Ullapool has great access during the winter months. The main A835 trunk road from Inverness to Ullapool is the route for the lifeline Ullapool-Stornoway ferry service and the road is therefore well maintained throughout the winter months. While it is best to avoid travel plans that involve very early morning or late-night drives between Ullapool and Inverness, the road is well maintained throughout daylight and early evening hours.

Accessibility by air and road: If you live in or near London, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Dublin, Belfast or Amsterdam then there are direct flights to Inverness that will mean that you can be entering Ullapool in less than 4 hours from when you stepped on the plane. Ullapool is therefore a perfect long winter-weekend destination (various car hire options are available from Inverness Airport).
